Glossary of Terms
ARC - Advanced Reader Copy, sometimes noted as A/C.
Boards - stiff part of book binding; front and back covers.
Book Club Edition - usually not the 1st edition, 1st printing. Usually is smaller in size and has cheaper paper.
First Thus - reissue of a book with a new preface, illustrations, revisions or newly edited.
Foxing - a chemical reaction, causing spots on page that are brown.
PBO - paperback only, true first.
Point of Issue - a change that occurs during the 1st edition's 1st printing. It may be on the book or dust jacket.
Remainder - these books have been returned to publisher and sold in bulk. Usually denoted by felt or other pen slash on top or bottom.
Review Copy - final, hardcover version that was distributed to reviewers in advance of publication. It usually has a letter inserted.
Trade Edition - the regular publisher's copy that is purchased at the local bookstore.
UP - Uncorrected Proof, sometimes noted as U/P.
Condition Rating
Very Fine (VF): Book - would be defect free, structurally sound. No cocking of the spine, remainder marks, library stamp, book plate, previous owner's name, tears, or missing pages. Dust jacket - would be bright, clean and without tears or nicks.
Fine (F): Book - would show some wear in accordance with a read volume that was handled gently. Dust Jacket - would show wear with tiny chips or very small closed tear. It is still bright and clean.
Good (G): Book - would have tears or chips on the boards, it may have a slight slant, pages would show foxing. Dust Jacket - slightly dirty, price clipped, taped tears, creased, slightly discolored.
Poor (P): Book - well worn copy, good for reading or bookend holder. Dust Jacket - torn, discolored, raggedy looking.
